U.K.: Horse drug may have entered human food chain

? British food safety officials say six horse carcasses that tested positive for the equine drug bute may have entered the human food chain in France.

The Food Standards Agency says eight out of 206 horses it checked tested positive for bute, an equine painkiller and anti-inflammatory. It said of those eight, six ? all slaughtered by a firm in southwest England ? were sent to France and ?may have entered the food chain.?

The agency is working with French authorities to trace the meat.

Earlier Thursday, Environment Minister David Heath told the House of Commons three horses might have entered the food chain. The reason for the discrepancy was not immediately clear.

Horsemeat itself is not dangerous to eat. But bute, or phenylbutazone, is considered harmful to human health.

Pistorius' girlfriend was a model, law graduate

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? The woman shot dead in double-amputee Olympian runner Oscar Pistorius' house was a model, a law school graduate and an entrepreneur committed to empowering women.

Reeva Steenkamp was to give an inspirational talk Thursday at a Johannesburg school.

Steenkamp had become a celebrity in her own right, said Publicist Sarit Tomlinson. She was one of FHM magazine's 100 Sexiest Women in the World for two years running, appeared in international and South African advertisements and was a celebrity contestant on Tropika Island of Treasure filmed in Jamaica. She was also the South African face of Avon cosmetics.

The freckled blonde who appeared in scanty bikinis on magazine covers and sashayed down the world's fashion ramps was "continuously breaking the model stereotype," said Tomlinson.

Steenkamp was "the sweetest, kindest, just angelic soul" and at the same time "a very inspiring individual, very passionate about speaking about women and empowerment."

Police said she was shot by four bullets in the early hours of Valentine Day. They said only Steenkamp and Pistorius were at his house in a gated complex in Pretoria, the capital. Police have arrested Pistorius on a charge of murder and said he will appear in court Friday. The two had been dating for a few months.

Scores of tributes were posted online. Her publicist said Steenkamp was 29 but police said she was 30.

Thursday morning, Steenkamp had been scheduled to give a motivational speech to school students in Johannesburg. "It was about empowerment and inspiration and what inspires you and how to follow your dreams," said Tomlinson, who had Steenkamp's notes for the speech.

On Twitter, Steenkamp tweeted messages urging women to stand up against rape as well as her excitement about Valentine's Day.

"What do you have up your sleeve for your love tomorrow?" she tweeted. "It should be a day of love for everyone."

Her last tweet was an enthusiastic acceptance of a friend's invite to celebrate the day with chocolate cupcakes topped with red hearts.

She also used her Twitter account to encourage her thousands of followers to fight sexual abuse.

"WEAR BLACK THIS FRIDAY IN SUPPORT AGAINST (hash)RAPE," she re-tweeted just hours before she died.

Steenkamp urged followers to stand up against violence against women, tweeting four days ago as South Africa was outraged by the particularly brutal rape and murder of a 17-year-old: "I woke up in a happy safe home this morning. Not everyone did. Speak out against the rape of individuals in SA (South Africa). RIP Anene Booysen (hash)rape (hash)crime (hash)sayNO."

Happtique: An App Store for Health Apps | HealthWorks Collective

There are literally tens of thousands of health, fitness, wellness and medical apps in smartphone stores, from diet tracking to asthma monitoring to smoking cessation, and everything in between.?The myriad selection can baffle a techie, let alone a Boomer or senior or trying to find an app to monitor their health. There has been no screening process for these apps?until now.

New App Store for Health Apps

Happtique, a mobile health application store and total app management solution, is developing an App Certification Program for medical, health, and fitness apps. The company states that the ?purpose of the program is to help users identify apps that meet high operability, privacy, and security standards and are based on reliable content.?

In a few months Happtique plans to unveil its App Certification Program for medical, health, and fitness apps.? Each app will be certified based on operability, privacy and security, and content. The apps will first be reviewed for technical standards (by technologists) and then for content standards, Tammy Lewis, Happtique?s Chief Marketing & Strategy Officer, explained.? Content reviewers will range from physicians and nurses to nurse practitioners.?

?All of the apps that meet Happtique?s certification?s standards will receive a recognizable 'seal,' similar to the Good Housekeeping seal of approval,? Lewis said.

Since one in ten Americans suffers from a chronic disease, having a one-stop medical and wellness app store is a welcome addition to patient health management.?In the meantime, consumers can still visit the Happtique App store and find thousands of apps in easy to find categories and subcategories.

  • Apps are categorized first by ?Apps for Professionals by Topic,? ?Apps by (Medical) Profession? and by ?Apps for Consumers & Patients?
  • Under ?Apps for Consumers & Patients? the app categories include Addictions, Alternative Care, Asthma, Cancer, Cosmetic? Surgery, Dental Health, Digestive Health, Diabetes, Eyes and Vision, Medications, Men?s Health, Mental Health, Rehab, Senior Health, Sex, Weight Management and FDA approved apps.?
  • A few categories have subcategories. For example, Addictions is broken down into Alcohol Abuse, Drug Abuse, Gambling, Eating Disorders and Smoking Cessation.
  • There are a total of 330 categories.

These health, wellness and medical apps are taking center stage as America begins to adopt phases of the Affordable Health Care Act. In the past few months I?ve attended a Mobile Health Care Summit in Washington, DC and the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas where the conversation focused on how doctors and hospitals need to involve patients more in managing their own health care. Mobile apps are one example of how patients can be more engaged.

Pew Research Center?s Internet & American Life Project released a report in November, 2012 reporting that half of all smartphone owners use their devices to get health information. Additionally, one-fifth of smartphone owners have health apps.?According to the study, the percentage of users of mobile health care apps has doubled since 2010.

We?re certain to see more doctors asking us to use mobile devices and email them our data.? And patients who want to advocate for remote health are encouraged to start the conversation with their physicians.

Valentine's Day: One of Broadway's most famous romances, 'The Phantom of the Opera,' celebrates its 25th year

As Valentine's Day arrives, one of the theater's most famous love stories is celebrating its twenty-fifth birthday. 'Phantom' opened on Broadway a few weeks before Valentine's Day in 1988.

Over the past quarter of a century, 37 different actresses have played the female lead in "The Phantom of the Opera" on Broadway. All 37 have been dressed by one woman: Erna Dias.

"I have no favorites. You can't do that," says Dias, who has been a wardrobe attendant with the show at the Majestic Theater in New York since rehearsals began.

She oversees each actress' 16 nightly costume changes ? one so short she has only 34 seconds to get it done ? and has rearranged her vacations to ensure she's present for each new heroine making her debut as Christine Daae.

"To keep this fresh, when I come in, I try to think of every night as opening night," she says. "I've been in this business 36 years and I never thought this show was going to last this long. This is unbelievable."

The show is celebrating its record-setting silver anniversary and it has eye-popping numbers ? grossing over $887 million, using 1,600 tons of dry ice and having its famous chandelier travel 4 million feet. But behind the numbers and behind the scenes, it is people like Dias who have kept "The Phantom of the Opera" going, one outfit at a time.

It's people like David Caddick, the Grammy-winning musical supervisor who also frequently conducts the show dressed in Edwardian tails. His hair has grown gray over the 25 years he's been with "Phantom."

"It keeps going because people want it to keep going," says Caddick, who leads the show's tours as well. "We have an audience that keeps coming back, and a new audience who have never seen it, and everyone's very grateful for that."

The musical opened on London's West End at the 1,200-seat Her Majesty's Theatre on Oct. 9, 1986, with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman in the lead roles. It crossed the Atlantic and opened on Broadway on Jan. 26, 1988, and has clocked more than 10,400 performances, becoming the Great White Way's longest-running show ever.

"Every single show is a pioneer into the future. Every single one makes it that much further," says actor Richard Poole, who has played Joseph Buquet in the show for 14 1/2 years. "It's an incredible blessing to be in something like this because you don't go into this business for security."

Two Dolphins named to NFL's under-25 team

The Miami Dolphins like to brag about the fact they have the second-youngest roster in the NFL.

Now the team's executive can also brag about the fact they have two Dolphins selected for the NFL.com's all-under 25 team, which you can check out at this link.

Second-year center Mike Pouncey, the Dolphins' 2012 first-round pick, was chosen for the all-under 25 team because of his two impressive seasons as a starter in Miami.

The write up under Pouncey's selections read: "Mike and Maurkice Pouncey are both stud centers, but the nod here goes to the less-heralded twin. He is particularly strong in pass protection, allowing just 1.25 sacks all season."

Starting strong safety Reshad Jones, who contributing 94 tackles, four interceptions, two forced fumbles and one sack in his second year as a starter, also made NFL.com's all-under 25 team.

Jones, who turns 25 later this month, finished 2012 ranked by ProFootballFocus.com as the NFL's third best safety, coming in behind San Diego's Eric Weddle and Buffalo's Jarius Byrd, who for the record turns 27 in October.

Pouncey, who turns 24 in July, spent most of the season as ProFootballFocus.com's top rated center, but his productivity dropped off in the season's final month. He finished the year ranked as the NFL's eighth best center, allowing two sacks, two hits and three hurries.

The Dolphins are one of five teams with two or more players on the NFL.com under-25 team.

Peugeot Citroen posts $6.7 billion loss for 2012

PARIS (AP) ? PSA Peugeot Citroen posted a record ?5 billion ($6.7 billion) loss last year after Europe's cratering car market forced France's largest automaker to book a ?3 billion financial charge.

As well as falling demand, which led to a 12.4 percent slump in new vehicle sales to ?27.8 billion, the Paris-based company had to contend with the rising cost of steel and other materials. Combined, they contributed to an operating loss of ?1.5 billion for the car-making division last year.

Chief Executive Philippe Varin said the loss "reflects the deteriorated environment in the automotive sector in Europe."

The number of new car registrations in Europe fell by 8.2 percent last year to the lowest level since 1995, according to Brussels-based car industry group ACEA. The French car market slumped 13.9 percent in 2012.

Peugeot Citroen, which makes two-thirds of France's cars, is being hit by a deepening recession in many markets in Europe, its main market. The company's share price has sunk nearly 60 percent over the last year. With news of the massive 2012 charge having been unveiled by the company last week, investors were not taken by surprise with Wednesday's announcement. The stock rebounded from recent lows, and was up 2.5 percent at ?6.09 in early trading.

Peugeot's troubles, which were already signaled by the near $1 billion loss it recorded in the first half of the year, have drawn concern at the highest levels of the French government. Last week the budget minister openly floated the idea of the government taking a stake in Peugeot, but the idea was immediately batted down by the finance minister.

"I don't want there to be any panic," finance minister Pierre Moscovici said in a radio interview Wednesday on France Info. He said the government has "done what needed to be done" in terms of helping the company, and he categorically denied the government was considering a partial nationalization of the car maker.

Last year the French government pledged ?7 billion in guarantees for the car maker's financing arm, Banque PSA Finance. The first ?1.2 billion installment of that aid was cleared by European Union authorities on Monday. The EU gave Peugeot management six months to come up with a restructuring plan for its car business as a condition for receiving the government lifeline.

In Europe, Peugeot Citroen's car sales slump was almost twice the overall market decline, or 16 percent versus 8.6 percent for the overall market.

The company sold 2.8 million fully assembled cars and light trucks last year, down from 3.1 million in 2011.

In July the company announced a plan to slash 8,000 jobs in France and close a major factory north of Paris, shocking workers and startling the government.

Peugeot's roots run deep in the French culture. It produced its first car in 1891. Peugeot-Citroen now accounts for two-thirds of French car production.

Peugeot's problems highlight the current woes facing Europe's carmakers. Unable to draw on government incentive schemes such as the "cash-for-clunkers" promotions launched in 2008-2009, manufacturers are suffering from falling sales.
