Disc Golf Tournament Benefits Peoria Food Bank

PEORIA, Ill -- Even though it's January, there are people out on the golf course.

That includes the disc golf course.

The 9th annual Disc Golf Ice Bowl was held Saturday at Laura Bradley Park.

30 teams of two people each competed to raise money for the Peoria Food Bank.

The first ice bowl was held in 1987 in Columbia, Missouri.

Last year alone, the events raised $275,000 for food charities.

The game is similar to traditional golf, but is intended to provide the challenges of golf without the cost.

"Instead of using a ball and a stick, we use discs. We throw at the targets which we call baskets. We tee off from a tee. We use several different kinds of plastic. We have putters, drivers, midranges. The three rules for this event is no wimps, no whiners, and the event cannot be canceled for any reason," said Timothy Wright of the Peoria Frisbee Club

Even 10 feet of snow?

"Absolutely not."

Last year's event raised $1,600 for the Peoria Food Bank.
