Top area golf pro Tom Moore is retiring on Jan. 1.

Top area golf pro Tom Moore is retiring on Jan. 1.

AIKEN ? At 8:30 on most mornings for more than three decades, Tom Moore has been pulling into the Palmetto Golf Club parking lot to begin another day as the club?s head pro and general manager.

He?s been arriving at that exact time at the famed Aiken private club off Whiskey Road since May 1982, most weeks working six days and untold hours.

Monday will be different for the dean of area golf pros. It will be his last one working at the club.

Moore, 63, is retiring while his health and energy are strong in order to devote more time to his wife, Kathy, their daughter, Jennifer, and his many friends.

?I think this is the next progression I need to do with my life,? Moore said.

?I?ve been telling people for years that I?m going to come see you and play golf,? Moore said. ?I don?t want to wake up and drop over dead one day or get to where my health is bad and think, ?Gosh, I wish I?d done that.? I want Kathy and Jennifer and I to do things that I didn?t do when I was younger because I was so intent on making this work.?

BY THIS, HE MEANS Palmetto Golf Club.

The 120-year club was in poor shape when Moore was hired as the head pro in May 1982. In fact, the condition of the club and the course was one reason Moore got the job. In his interview, he was candid about the state of the club and impressed upon the board that he was the man to bring it back to its glory.

?When I got here, we didn?t have a whole lot of members and what we did have were old and they weren?t playing golf, and the place had gotten run down,? Moore said. ?Steve Melnyk (a former Masters Tournament participant) remembers when he first started playing here, it was always a great golf course with a great layout but in terrible condition. Now it?s a great golf course, great clubhouse and it?s in great condition.?

Moore, who has served under 11 club presidents at Palmetto, said it ?wasn?t long? after he started the job that he began to believe the course was on its way.

?I had a vision of the place, how it would be,? he said. ?With the leadership of a lot of boards and club presidents, we finally got it that point. Not that it?s perfect now, but it?s not far off.?

That?s why the membership roll is full ? there are 300 in-town members and 200 national members, including former Masters participant and Walker Cup player and captain Jim Holtgrieve, of St. Louis.

THE MEMBERS CREDIT Moore for the turnaround, which has helped Palmetto become nationally known starting in the late 1980s through golf course rankings and word of mouth.

Moore even gave up playing golf to focus on the club.

?He was that type of guy,? said current member Bill Hardy, who was a member before Moore started. ?He was here seven days a week. Always, Palmetto was the first thing on his mind. Coming to Palmetto, he just quit playing golf and dedicated himself to this club and the membership. His love for this golf course, it showed to all of the members. He just loved Palmetto. He made it what it is.?

?He?s going to be sorely missed as the head professional at Palmetto,? said Dale Haas, another member.

?This has been my life,? Moore said. ?Tom Matthews, the current president of the club, asked me if there was one thing I?m most proud of from the day I got here to now and I said, ?everything.? He said, ?well, you can?t pick out one thing?? and I said, ?no, it?s everything.? Everything is so much better and it?s to where it?s supposed to be.?

Which is another reason Moore feels like this is the right time to step aside.

BROOKS BLACKBURN, WHO took over as Palmetto?s head pro in 2008 when Moore became director of golf, said Moore knows the names of not only the members, but their wives and children.

?That?s more important to them than the golf,? Blackburn said. ?He really cares about them.?

That concern worked well at Palmetto, along with Moore?s personality.

?I was amazed that he could be as smooth as he was with the mix of people we had,? former Palmetto president Joe Womack said. ?There were years we had guys who couldn?t rub two nickels together playing golf with millionaires.?

IT DIDN?T TAKE long for word to spread about the job Moore was doing at Palmetto. Starting in the late 1980s, he was offered jobs at much bigger clubs, including East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta and Atlanta Athletic Club, and turned them down. By that time, he was happily entrenched at Palmetto.

?I never thought I?d be here past three years,? Moore said. ?This was my first head job. I wanted to come here and show I could do the job and go somewhere else. I got here and got into some of this and just fell in love with the golf course.?

That?s why Moore didn?t mind putting in the extra hours.

?Some members figured it up and it was like working 42 years here for a normal person,? Blackburn said.

?Not too many people do with their lives just exactly what they want to do,? Palmetto member Kenny Wiland said. ?But Tom is one of them, for sure.?

?I don?t consider working here a job; it?s more of a love,? Moore said.

Blackburn said Moore became so associated with Palmetto that he can?t go to another club without someone asking him how Moore is doing.

?He is Palmetto,? Blackburn said.

AS THE YEARS flew by, Moore and his wife, who also works at the club, became friends with the members.

?With Kathy, all the time we spend here, all our friends are here,? Moore said. ?We do have other friends, but all the people we have contact with all the time are here.?

?The bottom line for me is he?s just been a great friend,? said member Berry Crain, who worked closely with Moore to help make the Palmetto Amateur one of the top amateur tournaments in the country. ?He was always the go-to guy you talked to if you had an idea. He was the first guy you bounced it off.?

The members/friends like Crain honored Moore on Dec. 7 at Palmetto with a retirement party. The outdoor party drew more than 300 members and friends and lasted three hours, with more than 30 minutes of that dedicated to tributes to Moore and the job he did.

The night deeply touched Moore.

?The two best days of my life were the day they hired me and that Tuesday (the retirement party) when I got all the acknowledgment of the members,? he said. ?It was awful nice of the members. It?s embarrassing, but it?s a big honor that they thought enough of me to throw a party. They gave me a nice gift. That they thought enough of me to do something like that, it was great.?

?It was love, just pure love,? said Moore?s wife, Kathy. ?So much love was coming from all the members, and we felt it. We felt very honored.?

MORE THAN FOUR years ago, Moore was on the six-member committee that chose Blackburn, a former USC Aiken All-American golfer and Midland Valley head pro to be his eventual successor.

But it wasn?t until ?about a year ago,? Kathy Moore said, that her husband started talking seriously about retiring.

?They were grooming him,? Hardy, the longtime Palmetto member, said of Blackburn, who is now 43. ?They knew Tom was going to retire so they brought in Brooks to get ready. I talked to Brooks when he was at Midland Valley about coming here and that Tom was going to be retiring. He said about possibily coming to Palmetto, ?Man, that?s living the dream, isn?t it?? ?

?It?s worked out good,? Moore said of the transition. ?Brooks is a good young man. He?s got a great personality. I wanted to get Brooks involved. I want Brooks to be there a long time.?

Moore will still be around Palmetto. The club has created an office for him upstairs in the clubhouse, and starting Tuesday, he?ll become the club?s pro emeritus. He even plans to start playing golf again.

?Right now, I can sit back and appreciate and play golf with these people on a personal level,? he said of the members.

He also plans to be around to help Blackburn if needed, especially during Masters Week.

?We have worked hard all this time, and now it?s time for us to enjoy it,? Moore said. ?And let the younger guys like Brooks, let it be their time.?

And what will Moore do on New Year?s Day, his first day of retirement? He?ll still come to Palmetto, but not at his usual time.

?I may wait until 9 a.m.,? he said.

Stocks open mixed as budget deadline nears

NEW YORK (AP) ? Stocks are little changed in early trading on Wall Street as a budget deadline approaches with no deal in sight.

The Dow Jones industrial average was down six points at 12,931 shortly after the opening bell Monday.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index was up two points at 1,405 and the Nasdaq composite edged up 10 points to 2,970.

There are just hours to go before a midnight deadline, when sweeping tax increases and government spending cuts will go into effect unless lawmakers agree on a plan to cut the nation's budget deficit.

More than $500 billion in 2013 tax increases would take effect and $109 billion would be slashed from defense and domestic programs.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says negotiations are ongoing.

Russian FM says Assad won't go

MOSCOW (AP) ? Russia's foreign minister said Saturday that Syrian President Bashar Assad has no intention of stepping down and it would be impossible to try to persuade him otherwise.

After a meeting with Lakhdar Brahimi, the U.N.'s envoy for the Syrian crisis, Lavrov also said that the Syrian opposition risks sacrificing many more lives if it continues to insist on Assad leaving office as a precondition for holding talks on Syria's future.

Assad "has repeatedly said publicly and privately, including in his meeting with Lakhdar Brahimi in Damascus not long ago, that he does not intend to leave for anywhere, that he will stay to the end in his post, that he will, as he expressed it, defend the Syrian people, Syrian sovereignty and so forth," Lavrov said. "There's no possibility to change this position."

Brahimi warned that the country's civil war could plunge the entire region into chaos by sending hundreds of thousands of refugees into neighboring nations, but his talks in Moscow produced no sign of progress toward settling the crisis.

Brahimi and Lavrov both said after their meeting that the 21-month-old Syrian conflict can only be settled through talks, while admitting that the parties in the conflict have shown no desire for compromise. Neither official hinted at a possible solution that would persuade the Syrian government and the opposition to agree to a ceasefire and sit down for talks about a political transition.

Brahimi, who arrived in Moscow on a one-day trip following his talks in Damascus with Assad this week, voiced concern about the escalation of the conflict, which he said is becoming "more and more sectarian."

The envoy warned that "if you have a panic in Damascus and if you have 1 million people leaving Damascus in a panic, they can go to only two places ? Lebanon and Jordan," and those countries may not be able to endure half a million refugees each.

Brahimi said that "if the only alternative is really hell or a political process, then we have got all of us to work ceaselessly for a political process."

Russia has been the main supporter of Assad's regime since the uprising began in March 2011, using its veto at the U.N. Security Council along with China to shield its last Mideast ally from international sanctions.

Lavrov said Russia would continue to oppose any U.N. resolution that would call for international sanctions against Assad and open the way for a foreign intervention in Syria. And while he again emphasized that Russia "isn't holding onto Bashar Assad," he added that Moscow continues to believe the opposition demand for his resignation as a precondition for peace talks is "counterproductive."

"The price for that precondition will be the loss of more Syrian lives," Lavrov said.

Both Brahimi and Lavrov insisted that efforts to end the civil war must be based on a peace plan that was approved at an international conference in Geneva in June.

The Geneva plan calls for an open-ended cease-fire, a transitional government to run the country until elections, and the drafting of a new constitution. But it was a non-starter with the opposition because of Russia's insistence that the plan leave the door open for Assad being part of the transition process and the fact that it didn't mention possible U.N. sanctions.

Brahimi said that while some "little adjustments" could be made to the original plan, "it's a valued basis for reasonable political process."

With the opposition offensive gaining momentum in Syria, there is little hope that the initiative would have any more chance of success than it had when it was approved.

Lavrov has said that Moscow is ready to talk to the main Syrian opposition group, even though it had earlier criticized the United States and other Western nations for recognizing the Syrian National Coalition for Opposition and Revolutionary Forces as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people.

On Friday, coalition leader Mouaz al-Khatib rejected the Russian invitation for talks and urged Moscow to support the opposition's call for Assad's ouster. Lavrov said Saturday that al-Khatib's statement was surprising after his earlier contacts with Russian diplomats in Egypt during which the opposition tentatively agreed on a meeting in a third country.

Lavrov said the coalition leader should "realize it would be in his own interests to hear our analysis directly from us."

Lavrov rejected the opposition claim that Russia's continuing weapons supplies to Assad's regime make it responsible for mass killings in Syria, saying that Moscow bears no responsibility for the Soviet-era weapons in Syrian arsenals. He said that defensive weapons such as anti-aircraft missiles that Russia has continued to supply to Damascus couldn't be used in the civil war.

"We aren't providing the Syrian regime with any offensive weapons or weapons that could be used in a civil war," Lavrov said. "And we have no leverage over what the regime has got since the Soviet times."

Georgy Mirsky, a leading Mideast expert with the Institute for World Economy and International Relations, a top foreign policy think tank, said President Vladimir Putin's stand on Syria is rooted in fear that joining international calls for Assad's resignation would make him look weak at home.

"It would look like an inadmissible concession to America, a virtual surrender. The Kremlin would lose its face, look like a loser," said Mirsky.

He wrote in his blog that Putin is resigned to Assad's eventual collapse and the loss of any Russian influence in a future Syria, but firmly opposes international sanctions. That stand allows Putin to tell his domestic audience that Russia has defended its ally until the end against overwhelming odds, said Mirsky.

Person-Centered HealthCare; Short Review of Self-Monitoring System

by Joan Justice, Senior Editor, HealthWorks Collective

First posted on HealthWorks Collective on 12/28/2012

Image

I am very much intrigued with the QS movement and self-monitoring for fitness and behavior modification.? I visited several exhibitors at the recent mHealthSummit meeting in Washington DC earlier this month and was interested in some of the products they had for self-tracking.? I actually ordered a BodyMedia Fit? and gave it to a friend to try out first as I thought it would be more interesting to get another person?s opinion.? This individual is currently a member of Weight Watchers and on an exercise program.? I was curious to see if he thought the device could be helpful as a behavior modification aid.

He wore the BodyMedia Fit for 5 days and logged in his meal data and weight.? An example of the data screen is shown below:

Image

As you can see, the device measures calories burned, calories consumed (you have to input your meals), physical activity (moderate and vigorous), steps taken, and sleep duration.? There are drop-down menus for more detail.? For instance, to get an idea of when physical activity took place, just click on the arrow to the left and this is what you see:

Image

This detail shows whether the activity was moderate or rigorous and when it actually took place.

When you log in your meals, the calories are not only counted, but broken down into fat, carbs, protein and alcohol and a neat little pie chart is created telling you where your calories are coming from:

Image

Image

There were also tips on ?What is a Healthy Diet?? and an option to customize the page.

I asked this user several questions about the BodyMedia Fit to get his opinion of the device.? I was interested in Ease of Setup, Ease of Use, Accuracy, and OverAll Opinion.? Here are his answers:

  • Ease of Setup ? the BodyMedia Fit was extremely easy to setup.? No problems with device or data logins, etc.
  • Ease of Use ? Data loaded easily.? No problems except perhaps getting used to wearing the device ? the elastic arm band was a little annoying at first.
  • Accuracy ? This user judged the device at about 75% accuracy.? The steps seemed to be overestimated and sometimes steps were registered in the middle of the night or at other moments when the user was sure he was not up and about.? Physical activity also was thought to be slightly over-estimated.? Sleep patterns were fairly accurate though and the calorie count was accurate and helpful.
  • Overall opinion ? The user liked the BodyMedia Fit and thought it was very ?cool? in the way it collected all the data.? He said that he would have to wear it for a longer period of time to get an overall feel of how useful it could be for behavior modification.? He also mentioned that he would like to understand more how it works so he could understand why it is slightly overestimating his physical activity and he could perhaps customize it to be more accurate.

This was a fun experiment.? I am going to try this device myself now and see what I think.? People have to really take more responsibility for their own health and wellness.? Devices like the BodyMedia Fit can help!

The Watanabes are coming | Global Investing

With?Shinzo Abe?s?new government intent on prodding the Bank of Japan into unlimited monetary easing,?it is hardly surprising that the?yen has?slumped to two-year lows against the dollar.?This could lead to even more flows into?overseas markets from Japanese investors seeking higher-yield homes for their money.

Japanese mom-and-pop investors ? known?collectively as Mrs Watanabe?- ?have for?years?been canny players of currency and interest rate arbitrage.?In recent years they have?stepped away from old favourites, New Zealand and Australia, in favour of?emerging markets such as Brazil, South Africa and Turkey. (See here? to read?Global Investing?s take on?Mrs Watanabe?s foray into?Turkey).?Flows from Japan?stalled somewhat in the wake of the 2010 earthquake but EM-dedicated Japanese investment trusts, known as toshin,?remain a mighty force, with?estimated assets of over $64 billion.??Analysts at JP Morgan?noted back in October that with the?U.S. Fed?s QE3 in full swing, more Japanese cash had started to flow out.

That trickle?shows signs of ?becoming a flood. Nikko?Asset Management, the country?s?third ?biggest money manager, said this week that retail investors had poured $2.3 billion into a mutual fund that invests in overseas shares ? the biggest? subscription since October 2006. This fund?s model portfolio has a 64 percent weighting to U.S. shares, 14 percent to Mexico and 10 percent to Canada while the rest is split between Latin American countries.

And what of currency wars? The yen has slumped 12 percent against the dollar this year while currencies from emerging economies Korea, Philippines, and Mexico?have ?risen 6-7 percent. JP Morgan predicts the yen, currently trading around 86 to the dollar, ?will trade between 80 and 90 next year ( previous estimate?75-85 yen) But some in the?new administration want more?? Abe?s special advisor Koichi Hamada?says?only a 95-100 per dollar level would be proof that monetary easing is working.

So emerging?central banks may have?a hard fight to keep a lid on their currencies if?outflows from Japan gather momentum. Look at the Korean won ? it is trading at a 2-1/2 year high against the yen, having risen 21 percent?in 2012, the largest annual gain since 1998. That?s painful for an economy that sends around 6 percent of its exports to Japan; its companies from carmakers to electronics manufacturers compete against?Japan for other export markets and all that should eventually force the central bank to step in. The Singapore dollar?meanwhile has appreciated?19 percent?versus the yen this year.

Japanese?citizens have 1,500 trillion yen in personal assets and the mutual fund industry is worth $720 billion.?Once?the yen debasement gets fully under way,?more of this cash will be?hunting for yield overseas.

Nintendo Wii U Game System Review | Gear Diary

gear diary Reviews Games & Gaming Console Gaming Nintendo Wii U Game System Review

The Nintendo Wii U ushers in a new wave of ?next generation? video game console systems with expanded functions and convenient backward-compatible functions stemming from a sleek rectangular console and portable GamePad with screen.

The Hype

?For 30 years, game machines ? couldn?t take on a more important role than the TV itself.?

Make Wii U the centerpiece of your home entertainment setup with these applications, accessible the day you bring your system home. Every Wii U console comes packed with an array of applications to enjoy the day you bring your system home, after a quick system update. Interact with other Wii U players online, make video calls from your TV, download full games from the comfort of your couch, and much more.

The Reality

The Wii U had an original launch window between March 2012 and December 2012 and eventually debuted on November 18, 2012, so gamers experienced a predictable pre-order frenzy for the holiday season.

The impressive high-definition graphics make a winning combination with Nintendo?s vibrantly colorful games while the lightweight GamePad with separate screen offers great gameplay/viewing options.

The Wii U is currently available in the following two versions:

  • A white colored basic set (8 GB internal storage), Wii U GamePad controller, GamePad stylus, sensor bar, console AC adapter, GamePad AC adapter, and HDMI cable for $299.99.
  • A black colored deluxe set (32 GB storage), Wii U GamePad controller, GamePad stylus, sensor bar, console AC adapter, GamePad AC adapter, HDMI cable, Nintendo Land game, GamePad Stand, GamePad Cradle, console stand, and digital promotion eligibility for $349.99.

The Wii U is backward-compatible with Wii games as well as the Wii remotes, Wii MotionPlus remote, classic controller, and balance board. The Wii menu appears separately when loading Wii game discs.

The Wii U is not backward-compatible with GameCube games, which diminishes use of your existing game library, but work well on the developer side so they can develop an experience that cooperates with existing systems instead of trying to replace them.

Setup works very well with matching color cords for power (yellow), HDMI, and the sensor bar (orange) plus a separate cord for GamePad similar to the Wii U power cord. The GamePad cord is not the same as the Nintendo DS/DSi/3DS handheld console power/battery charging cord. The GamePad cord plug is just a bit bigger and wider.

Next follow the quick start guide to establish your Nintendo Network ID and internet connection settings (maximum of six). Up to 12 users are available with unique parental controls for each. Users can perform a transfer from the Nintendo Wii to the Wii U where both systems are connected to a television.

gear diary Reviews Games & Gaming Console Gaming Nintendo Wii U Game System Review

Players can transfer Miis to the Wii U from the Nintendo Wii and/or Nintendo 3DS. Like the Wii transfer the process gets fairly detailed.

gear diary Reviews Games & Gaming Console Gaming Nintendo Wii U Game System Review

The Wii U has 1080p support and wireless (IEEE 802.11b/g/n) connection.?The Wii U supports SD memory cards (port in front) and external USB storage with four ports (two in front and two in back).

Power buttons on the GamePad and console can be turned off when held for at least one second. The Wii U has activates an automatic power off feature after one hour of inactive use. The console and GamePad have impressive, reflective finishes that make cleaning relatively easily.

Wii U console weighs about 3.5 pounds and is capable of supporting two Wii U GamePad controllers, up to four Wii Remote (or Wii Remote Motion Plus) controllers or Wii U Pro Controllers plus Wii accessories such as the Nunchuk, Classic Controller and Wii Balance Board.

gear diary Reviews Games & Gaming Console Gaming Nintendo Wii U Game System Review

A separate battery hatch on the front right contains a lithium coin cell battery (CR2032) that needs replaced when the console clock stops functioning.

Users can sync up to 10 controllers ? my ?dream team? would be two GamePads, four Motion Plus remotes, and four Wii U Pro Controllers (perfect for games like Call of Duty: Black Ops II). GamePads are scheduled to be sold separately in early 2013.

gear diary Reviews Games & Gaming Console Gaming Nintendo Wii U Game System Review

The Wii U Pro Controller (sold separately from the Wii U) charges for 4.5 hours and lasts approximately 80 hours. It has a replaceable battery (similar procedure as GamePad).

The new GamePad must be synced or paired with the Wii U console ? a similar process for existing Wii controllers except the press console sync button twice then press sync on GamePad.

Pre-installed electronic manuals are also included for convenience and contain helpful web links. As with the Wii, avoid radio frequency interference so the synched remotes work properly and no issues arise for the near-field communication used in the GamePad.

The lightweight, 1.1 pound Wii U GamePad becomes the biggest game controller while offering other options similar to a computer tablet. One GamePad is included with every console.

The 10.5-inch wide GamePad includes a touchpad screen, two analog sticks, microphone, and separate speaker system and volume control with headphone jack. The sound is surprisingly strong and often has different sounds than the television and other entertaining effects.

The removable and rechargeable GamePad battery lasts about three to five hours after charging for approximately 2.5 hours. The Wii U Pro Controller offers a nice backup option for prolonged Wii U use while other third party options (e.g. Nyko?s U Boost) will release to prolong GamePad battery life.

gear diary Reviews Games & Gaming Console Gaming Nintendo Wii U Game System Review

The battery charging port on the GamePad is located at the top left while the bottom center also allows battery charging on the GamePad stand with the adapter plugging into the back.

When placed on a stand the GamePad should be in the horizontal position only, but gameplay incorporates the GamePad in several orientations include vertically and horizontally.

gear diary Reviews Games & Gaming Console Gaming Nintendo Wii U Game System Review

The touch screen on the GamePad controller measures 6.2 inches and acts as a second console when others want to use the television ? a defining feature for the Wii U. This unique two screen (a.k.a. ?asymmetric?) feature allows for individual experiences (e.g. television viewing, Wii U games, etc.) within the same shared viewing.

The GamePad screen has a 16:9 aspect ratio LCD touch screen plus motion control capabilities using an accelerometer, gyro sensor and magnetic sensor.

gear diary Reviews Games & Gaming Console Gaming Nintendo Wii U Game System Review

The Gamepad can also be used as a television remote control even while the Wii U console is turned off.

Traditional GamePad button controls include the directional pad, dual analog sticks, stick buttons, A/B/X/Y buttons, power button, home, select, start, +/ and directional pad. The design fits well and the lightweight structure fits the palms nicely. gear diary Reviews Games & Gaming Console Gaming Nintendo Wii U Game System Review

The ZL/ZR button and L/R button orientation will take some adjustment. Users have a nicely contoured bar behind the GamePad where they can alternate buttons using their index fingers or use their index fingers for L/R buttons and middle finger for the ZL/ZR buttons.

gear diary Reviews Games & Gaming Console Gaming Nintendo Wii U Game System Review

Players can also push down on the dual analog sticks similar to L3 and R3 buttons on PlayStation 3.

The front-facing camera offers nice capabilities for video chats and other functions. Since the camera faces forward it would be great to eventually get a facial detection options where the system would automatically pause when someone is not in view. Another helpful energy-saving feature.

Wis. couple says pet chicken alerted them to blaze

(AP) ? A Wisconsin couple says fire clucks, not fire trucks, helped them escape a blaze at their home.

Alma Center Fire Chief Jeff Gaede (GAY'-dee) says the couple's pet chicken woke them at about 6:15 a.m. Thursday. He says the smoke alarms didn't go off when the fire started in the attic of their attached garage.

He says the chicken and a cat also escaped, but another cat died.

Neighbor Brad Krueger told WEAU-TV (http://bit.ly/ZGk90z ) that he raised the chicken on his farm until dogs chased it away. The couple then started caring for it.

Gaede says he's heard of dogs and cats alerting people to fires but he was amazed to hear about the chicken.

The fire destroyed the house. The cause is still being investigated.

The Goebellesque/McTernin trick for 2013 - Menzies House

Considering modern technology, McTernan seeks to control ALP propaganda via Google and Wikipedia. When the ordinary person does a web search for "facts" about Australian political affairs, page after page will be propaganda from the Goebellesque McTernan. Step 6 of the 10 steps decreed in the Communist Manifesto as carried out in the US.?GC. Ed.

6.??????????????????Centralization of the means of communication and transport in the hands on the State.?Part of the [New Deal] by?Franklin Delano Roosevelt?theCommunications Act of 1934?established the [Federal Communications Commission (FCC)], it is charged with regulating all non-federal government use of the radio spectrum (including radio and television broadcasting), and all interstate telecommunications (wire, satellite, and cable) as well as all international communications that originate or terminate in the United States.

McTernan says:

''Adopting an open-data framework to increase transparency, accountability and collaboration would allow the digitally literate public to design innovative ways to use government data,'' he said in his thinker's report, which has been made public.

''Everybody in Australia has got two personal researchers - Google and Wikipedia,'' he said. ''So, in the end you need to be clear: this is the problem, these are the facts, this is the way we're going to analyse it, and this is what we're going to do.''

Sarah Dajani: Christmas Souks in Amman: Discovering the City's Winter Spirit

As of last week, I hadn't really felt the Christmas spirit in Amman. There were no blackout sales. Stores maintained their regular hours. "Jingle Bells" did not become the default soundtrack of every car ride, store visit, or elevator ride. The days got quieter and as university students and cross-continent commuters returned home for the holidays, it seemed as though the entire city was entering a grizzly bear-style hibernation. At least that's what I observed from the warmth of my double-comforter bed.

But after a few days indoors I decided it was time to venture out in search of the city's Christmas spirit and hit the Christmas market circuit.?

The Souq?took place at a reused electricity company hangar?at Ras Al Ain and showcased?Mike Derderian originals at Mlabbas clothing, Shakshaka jewelry made by high-school ingenue Yasmine Al Masry, and Ukrainian mosaic Christmas eggs, hand painted in Jordan. Homespun creativity was the norm; it wasn't uncommon to find a teenager with a straight-A average and a bubbly social life running her own cupcake business on the side, or a funky-fruity caramel maker churning out jeweled candy apples and buttery almond brittle "just for fun."
My next stop was the Nine Days of Christmas Festival, an event organized by Friends of Jordan, an NGO whose members are often the driving force behind city's cultural events. The festival's Christmas market attracted a network of Jordan's non-profit and socially-conscious ventures. Shams Jordanie, a French non-profit operating art co-operatives and organic farmers markets sold local olive oil and za'atar, while next door the Promise Welfare Society sold homemade pumpkin, strawberry, and citrus jams alongside pickled makdous?eggplants to fund college scholarships in underprivileged communities.
Another evening was spent listening to the holiday concert put on by?Dozan wa Awtar, Amman's multicultural choral group, and attending the Marriott's Christmas tree lighting festival. Something about the three-storey?evergreen, the 20 elaborate gingerbread houses, and the eggnog-flavored sahlab?made that hotel lobby one of the happiest places in Amman that night.
My last stop on the Christmas circuit was Souk Jara's Art of Christmas Souk. Aptly named, the Souk Jara Christmas Souk was like two souks in one, with handmade Syrian silk brocade, heavenly gingerbread cookies, "nummy" blueberry cheesecake cups, and even an old friend: Jawi Coffee Roasters.
By the time I returned home to the warmth of my double-comforter bed, I felt like I'd found Amman's Christmas spirit. And it wasn't just the carol singers, or the Christmas trees, or the awkward Santas. It wasn't the eggnog, the gingerbread houses, or Abu Ghannam's dance moves. It was the sense of community, of surprise meeting in common places, the sense of entrepreneurship,?inspiringly charming and uncompromisingly diligent, and the sense of giving, whether through art, music, or food.

Merry Christmas and happy holidays everyone!

Business Insider Blog: Top 10 Principles for Positive Business Ethics

This morning, I read about a company using on-line auctions to defraud customers. Last week, I consulted on an ethics complaint where a business coach betrayed a client's confidentiality. And, recently a Physician was convicted of insider trading based on information from a patient, a violation of both business ethics and her professional ethics.

1. Business Ethics are built on Personal Ethics. There is no real separation between doing what is right in business, and playing fair, telling the truth and being ethical in your personal life.p>

2. Business Ethics are based on Fairness. Would a dis-interested observer agree that both sides are being treated fairly? Are both sides negotiating in good faith? Does each transaction take place on a "level playing field"? If so, the basic principles of ethics are being met.p>

3. Business Ethics require Integrity. Integrity refers to whole-ness, reliability and consistency. Ethical businesses treat people with respect, honesty and integrity. They back up their promises, and they keep their commitments.p>

4. Business Ethics require Truth-telling. The days when a business could sell a defective product and hide behind the "buyer beware" defense are long gone. You can sell products or services that have limitations, defects or are out-dated, but not as first-class, new merchandise. Truth in advertising is not only the law, business ethics require it.p>

5. Business Ethics require Dependability. If your company is new, unstable, about to be sold, or going out of business, ethics requires that you let clients and customers know this. Ethical businesses can be relied upon to be available to solve problems, answer questions and provide support.p>

6. Business Ethics require a Business Plan. A company's ethics are built on its image of itself and its vision of the future and its role in the community. Business ethics do not happen in a vacuum. The clearer the company's plan for growth, stability, profits and service, the stronger its commitment to ethical business practices.p>

7. Business Ethics apply Internally and Externally. Ethical businesses treat both customers and employees with respect and fairness. Ethics is about respect in the conference room, negotiating in good faith, keeping promises and meeting obligations to staff, employers, vendors and customers. The scope is universal.p>

8. Business Ethics require a Profit. Ethical businesses are well-run, well-managed, have effective internal controls, and clear expectations of growth. Ethics is about how we live in the present to prepare for the future, and a business without profits (or a plan to create them) is not meeting its ethical obligations to prepare for the future well-being of the company, its employees and customers.p>

9. Business Ethics are values-based. The law, and professional organizations, must produce written standards that are inflexible and universal. While they may talk about "ethics", these documents are usually prescriptive and refer to minimal standards. Ethics are about values, ideals and aspirations. Ethical businesses may not always live up to their ideals, but they are clear about their intent.

>

10. Business Ethics come from the Boss. Leadership sets the tone, in every area of a business. Ethics are either central to the way a company functions, or they are not. The executives and managers either lead the way, or they communicate that cutting corners, deception and dis-respect are acceptable. Line staff will always rise, or sink, to the level of performance they see modeled above them. Business ethics starts at the top.

Ethics is about the quality of our lives, the quality of our service, and ultimately, about the bottom line. An unhappy customer complains to an average of 16 people. Treating employees, customers, vendors and the public in an ethical, fair and open way is not only the right thing, in the long run, it's the only way to stay in business.

New Mothers May Watch Their Debt Differently | The Board Magazine

New mothers have a lot of things to worry about, but payday loans shouldn?t be one of them. Preparing for the arrival of a new baby is a challenge, mentally, physically, and financially. Adding the stress of repaying a payday advance to an already worrisome situation is a recipe for disaster. However, women in the 24-40 year old demographic?an age group that corresponds with the childbearing years?are the most likely to utilize payday loan services. Women in this age group may be more likely to utilize payday lender services for a variety of reasons.

The combination of limited work hours and the high costs of caring for an infant is bound to financially challenge many mothers, especially if they are raising said child on their own. Such financial hardship makes them strong candidates for payday loan usage, as they need to care for their children yet don?t always have the means to do so. Raising a child is expensive, and the first year may be the most costly of all. Buying clothes, diapers, food, strollers, furniture, car seats, and baby proofing one?s house are just a few of the expenses associated with the stork?s arrival. Clearly, new mothers have a lot of expenses to juggle, and doing so with a brand new baby is not an easy task. Some preventive measures can be taken, however, to keep a new mom out of the payday loan office.

*Refurbish old furniture and save on decorating the nursery. One of the best things about decorating for a baby is that you can have a lot of fun with it. Have an old, worn dresser or armoire in your house? Paint it a kid friendly color and change out the hardware to make it a new, individualized, and fun nursery piece. A can of paint and a few nobs are much cheaper than the interest on a payday loan, not to mention the cost of buying a new piece of furniture.

*Shop at thrift stores and yard sales for lightly-used strollers, car seats, high chairs, and furniture. Babies grow fast; thus, the aforementioned items are often only used for a brief period of time before the baby has outgrown them. By purchasing these items pre-owned, a new mom can save money while contributing to another family. The family who is selling the item could likely use the extra income too, thus the purchase is a win-win.

*Don?t be too proud to take hand me downs from family and friends. Baby clothes get little wear, as the little ones grow so quickly. If you have a friend or family member with old clothes they are willing to donate, take them. Doing so will free up some storage space in the friends/families house and keep your baby snug and fashionable without breaking the bank.

*Have a baby shower with a diaper raffle. A baby shower is a great environment to share with your friends and family the love and excitement that a new baby brings. Along with gifts of clothes and baby necessities, baby showers give a new mom the chance to acquire diapers, which are unbelievably expensive. Have a diaper raffle at your shower, wherein each guest gets a raffle ticket for each pack of diapers that they bring. Whoever wins the raffle receives a nice gift, like a dinner gift certificate or massage. The cost of the gift will be far less than the cost of the diapers and save the new mom a bundle.

By following these tips, a new mom can avoid payday loans and provide for her new addition. When a little extra cash in needed, getting a payday loan may be fastest and easiest. Keep in mind, the money you borrow is expected to be paid back with your next paycheck. Most new moms are still at home with their baby and may not have the proper source of income to be in a borrowing position.
