KOLKATA, India (AP) ? A former Mr. Universe who has just turned 100 said Sunday that happiness and a life without tensions are the key to his longevity.
Manohar Aich, who is 4 foot 11 inches (150 centimeters) tall, overcame many hurdles, including grinding poverty and a stint in prison, to achieve body building glory.
His children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren gathered Sunday in the eastern city of Kolkata to celebrate his birthday the day before.
Hindu priests chanted prayers while a feast was laid out to honor Aich, winner of the 1952 Mr. Universe body building title.
Rippling his muscles and flashing a toothless grin, Aich says his ability to take his troubles lightly and remain happy during difficult times are the secrets to his long life.
That, and a simple diet of milk, fruits and vegetables along with rice, lentils and fish have kept him healthy.
He does not smoke and has never touched alcohol, he said.
"I never allow any sort of tension to grip me. I had to struggle to earn money since my young days, but whatever the situation, I remained happy," Aich said, sitting in a room decorated with posters and pictures of his many bodybuilding triumphs.
Aich, who was born in the small town of Comilla in Bengal, was a puny youngster. But he was attracted to exercising and building his muscles when as a schoolboy he saw a group of wrestlers in action.
In 1942, he joined the Royal Air Force under India's British colonial rulers and it was there that he began his relentless pursuit of body building.
Encouraged by a British officer named Reub Martin, who introduced him to weight training, Aich earned praise for his physique from his peers in the air force.
Some years later, however, he was thrown into prison when he protested against colonial oppression.
"It was in the jail that I began weight training seriously. This helped me prepare myself for the world championship," said Aich.
"In jail I used to practice on my own, without any equipment, sometimes for 12 hours in a day," he recalled.
The jail authorities were impressed with his perseverance and he was given a special diet to help build his stamina.
India's independence in 1947 led to Aich's release from jail. Dogged by poverty, Aich and his wife struggled to put their four children through school. There was little cash to indulge his passion for body building, but Aich took up odd jobs to earn a little on the side.
His 1950 win of a "Mr. Hercules" contest spurred him to set his sights on the Mr. Universe tournament in London.
In 1951, Aich came second in the contest, and stayed on in London to prepare for another shot at the title. He returned to India after winning the title in 1952.
What followed were a host of awards, including top positions in the Asian Body building Championships. Over the years, he also earned the more popular title of "Pocket Hercules" due to his 4 foot, 11 inch-frame.
Six decades later, Aich helps his sons run a gym and fitness center and spends his days guiding juvenile hopefuls to reach the heights of body building.
A minor stroke last year robbed him of the ability to lift weights, but he keeps a watchful eye on young body builders training in his gym.
Although his two sons did not take up body building, Aich says his mentoring has earned him rewards. It has produced India's eight-time national champion, Satya Paul. Another protege, Premchand Dogra, snagged the Mr. Universe title in 1988.
Among his regrets, says Aich, is that he never had a chance to meet his more famous counterpart, a fellow Mr. Universe winner, Arnold Schwarzenegger.
But Aich says he's seen many of Schwarzenegger's action films.

In the United States, St. Patrick?s Day is as misunderstood, and misrepresented as Cinco de Mayo.? That we have reduced this important cultural and historic observance to yet another occasion where we see just how drunk we can get is either shameful or beautiful. The jury remains out.
If you are going to celebrate St. Patrick?s Day, and you are going to do so by getting drunk (how else, right?), some of the following could reduce your hangover and the damage you do, and may salvage a few of your personal relationships.
PERSPECTIVE
As far as an excuse to drink St. Patrick?s Day ranks up there with New Year?s Eve. March 17th is all about drinking, specifically heavy beer and whiskey.? If you are a regular Guinness, Harp, Jameson or Bushmills drinker, then you likely live in Ireland, and you don?t need our advice.? For everyone else, know that the 364 days you spend drinking Miller Lite and Chardonnay do nothing to prepare you for a night of snorkeling Black & Tans.? Irish ale, and indeed most foreign beer, contains more alcohol than we are used to. And sorry, wearing a green shirt, green socks, and that stupid hat does not miraculously increase your tolerance.? More, Irish Whiskey contains vindictive little demons that make you loud and forgetful, and should not be consumed by amateurs, that is, everyone intentionally celebrating St. Patrick?s Day at Bennigan?s.
PACING
For proper observance of this delightful day you are not required to fire-hose alcohol into your body.? This will also come as a surprise, Irish beer is outstanding, provided you take the time to taste and enjoy it.
Every Irish pub that is worth visiting, i.e., those that do not resemble a T.G.I. Friday?s, will have a fine selection of extraordinary beer.
Order a Smithwick?s, or a Curim, admire the novel curvature of the unfamiliar glass. (Resist the urge to?steal the interesting beer glass.)?Casually (I know) enjoy the taste and texture and appreciate, or at least try to accept how taking your time, and sipping from an authentic vessel enhances the overall experience.? Yes, you will be far less drunk at 4pm than those guys next to you doing ?Irish Car Bombs,? but you stand a better chance of retaining, and not being ashamed of the memories you create.

Everyone around you is already, or is well on their way to being drunk.? The temptation to join the delirious ranks (see Car Bomb guys), is nigh-on irresistible.? If you possess an uncommon desire to remember your St. Patrick?s night out, or perhaps if you forgot to ask for Monday off work, maybe try getting a little less drunk this year.
Did we lose you?? If you are still reading and perhaps entertaining a modicum of responsible behavior, see if this helps:
- Don?t resort to that trick of getting drunk at home before going out. Yes, the idea is you will spend less once you hit the bars, but all you really accomplish is a rapid onset of irrationality. Trust me, the Car Bomb crew didn?t show up sober either, and the only thing slowing them down is an inconvenient oxygen dependence.
- Limit your intake.? While still able to do so, try to weigh the pros and cons of overindulgence.? We?ll get you started, there are no pros.
- Gravitate toward crowded venues.? Fortunately, on St. Patrick?s Day your town should be full of such places.? Busy bars equal busy bartenders, and it is harder to overdo it when you can?t get a drink.? What you lose in terms of volume drinking, you will make up in a wealth of people watching.
Without much hope of success (our Super Bowl survival guide was so poorly received it had to be taken down), we offer the preceding as something upon which to ruminate, and perhaps attempt on a day less conducive to drinking.? If you find yourself incapacitated on this or any subsequent March 18th, do not despair, you will not be alone.? If you had any memory of it at all, you would recall a night filled with some several thousand fellow, temporary Irish-folk, singing, sweating, swearing and spilling. While unnerving, the recollection would help explain why you currently feel and smell the way you do.

SAN DIEGO -- Obesity appears to significantly increase the risk of death tied to sleeping pills, nearly doubling the rate of mortality even among those prescribed 18 or fewer pills in a year, researchers reported Friday.
"Obesity emerged as a marker of increased vulnerability," said Robert Langer, M.D., M.P.H., at the annual American Heart Association's Epidemiology and Prevention | Nutrition, Physical Activity and Metabolism 2012 Scientific Sessions in San Diego.
"The associations between sleeping pills and increased mortality were present, and relatively stronger, even in people aged 18 to 54," said Dr. Langer, a family physician and epidemiologist with the Jackson Hole Center for Preventive Medicine in Jackson, Wyo.
"Obese patients appear particularly vulnerable, perhaps through interaction with sleep apnea," said study co-author Daniel Kripke, M.D., a psychiatrist with Scripps Clinic's Viterbi Family Sleep Center in San Diego.
He noted that sleeping pills were previously associated with more and longer pauses in breathing in people with sleep apnea.
Among obese patients, use of sleeping pills was associated with about one extra death per year for every 100 people who were prescribed the medications, Dr. Langer said.
Additionally, men who took sleeping pills were about twice as likely to die as women who received the medications, after accounting for other factors, he said.
Friday's findings were the latest to emerge from a Scripps Clinic-led study of almost 40,000 patients, which was initially published in late February in the open-access online journal BMJ Open.

The research was the first to show that eight of the most commonly used hypnotic drugs were associated with increased hazards of mortality and cancer, including the popularly prescribed medications zolpidem (known by the brand name Ambien) and temazepam (also known as Restoril), Dr. Kripke said.
Those drugs had been thought to be safer than older hypnotics because of their shorter duration of action but were found to have associations with excess deaths no different from the older drugs they have largely replaced.
In order to eliminate the possibility that other factors led to the results, study participants who were prescribed sleeping pills were matched with control patients of similar ages, gender and health who did not receive hypnotics.
The newest findings were delivered by Dr. Langer during an oral session at the American Heart Association conference that focused on drug safety.
For obese patients in the study who had an average body mass index of 38.8, the risk of death was 8.1 times higher on average among those who were prescribed the smallest number of pills (18 or fewer annually) when compared with similar study participants who did not take the medications. The mortality rate was 9.3 times higher on average among obese patients receiving the largest number of pills (132 or more annually).
Death was 4.6 times more likely on average among all patients who received any amount of sleeping pills.
The study cast a shadow over a growing segment of the pharmaceutical industry that expanded by 23 percent in the United States from 2006 to 2010 and generated about $2 billion in annual sales.
Using data stored in an electronic medical record that has been in place for more than a decade, the researchers obtained information on almost 40,000 patients cared for by a large integrated health system in the northeastern United States.
The research included 10,531 sleeping pill users who were prescribed the medications for an average of 2.5 years and 23,674 control participants who were not prescribed the drugs. Information came from outpatient clinic visits conducted between Jan. 1, 2002, and Sept. 30, 2006.
"It is important to note that our results are based on observational data, so even though we did everything we could to ensure their validity, it's still possible that other factors explain the associations," said co-author Lawrence E. Kline, D.O., who is medical director of the Viterbi Family Sleep Center. "We hope our work will spur additional research in this area using information from other populations."
Funding for the study came from the Scripps Health Foundation and other philanthropic sources.
The research should prompt physicians to consider alternatives to hypnotic medications, Dr. Kline said.
Clinicians at the Viterbi Family Sleep Center focus on cognitive therapy that teaches patients to better understand the nature of sleep. For example, some people suffering from insomnia might require less than the eight hours of sleep commonly recommended for each night.
Patients also can benefit from practicing good sleeping habits and relaxation, as well as taking advantage of the body's natural clock, which is driven by the rising and setting of the sun, Dr. Kline said. "Understanding how to use the circadian rhythm is a very powerful tool that doesn't require a prescription," he said.
When insomnia results from emotional problems such as depression, doctors should treat the psychological disorder rather than prescribe sleeping pills that could prove to be harmful, Dr. Kripke said.

Squid eye is sperm whale defence

The world's biggest squid species have developed huge eyes to give early warning of approaching sperm whales.
Colossal and giant squid both have eyes that can measure 27cm (11in) across - much bigger than any fish.
Scientists found that huge eyes offer no advantages in the murky ocean depths other than making it easier to spot enormous shapes - such as sperm whales.
Writing in Current Biology journal, they say this could explain the equally huge eyes of fossil ichthyosaurs.
Lead scientist Dan Nilsson from Lund University in Sweden was present at the unique dissection of a colossal squid performed four years ago in New Zealand.
There, he examined and handled the eyes - in particular, the hard parts of the lens.
These alone are bigger than an entire human eye.

"We were puzzled initially, because there were no other eyes in the same size range - you can find everything up to the size of an orange, which are in large swordfish," Prof Nilsson told BBC News.
"So you find every small size, then there's a huge gap, then there are these two species where the eye is three times as big - even though squid are not the largest animals."
The streamlined giant squid (various species of Architeuthis) and the much chunkier colossal squid (Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni) can both grow to more than 10m long, as measured from the tip of the body to the end of their tentacles.
The colossal squid especially is equipped with a fearsome arsenal of weapons, including barbed swivelling hooks.
Sense of proportionScars on the bodies of sperm whales indicate that the two creatures regularly do battle, while colossal squid beaks found in the stomachs of sperm whales indicate that the latter often win.
Though colossal squid are encountered remarkably rarely by people, they are thought to make up about three-quarters of sperm whales' diet in the Southern Ocean.
Whereas the whales can spot squid using sonar, the squid can deploy nothing except vision - which suggests there would be a powerful evolutionary pressure towards developing effective eyes.
Prof Nilsson's team used mathematical models of how different sizes of eye perform at depths up to 1km.
There, moving objects are most detectable through the bioluminescence they provoke from countless tiny creatures in the water.
The models showed that in general, there is no benefit to be gained from developing eyes bigger than the swordfish's.
The exception is a really large moving object.
Here, large eyes enable better detection of a pattern of point sources of bioluminescence - light given off by tiny organisms - in low-contrast conditions.
This would give the squid warning of a sperm whale approaching at a distance of about 120m, the researchers calculate - potentially allowing it to take evasive action and avoid being eaten.
"It's the predation by large, toothed whales that has driven the evolution of gigantism in the eyes of these squid," commented Soenke Johnsen, a biologist at Duke University in Durham, US, who was also part of the research team.
They speculate that eyes of the same size might have enabled ichthyosaurs, large marine reptiles that died out about 90m years ago, to avoid the fearsome jaws of the even larger pliosaurs.

Futures Slip on Weak Chinese Economic Data; Zoll Medical, Tudou, and Youku In Focus
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) is headed toward a weak start this Monday morning, as Wall Street digests weak Chinese economic data released over the weekend. Additionally, Greece will be back in the headlines again today, as a Euro-zone meeting is slated for later this morning to work on finalizing the country?s debt swap and bailout funds.
Against this backdrop, futures on the DJIA Mini are trading about 3 points below fair value, while the S&P 500 Index (SPX) and Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQ) are trading 1.25 points and 3.9 points below fair value, respectively.
In equity news, the shares of Zoll Medical (ZOLL) have surged more than 24% in pre-market trading. Investors are responding to Asahi Kasei?s agreement to purchase ZOLL for $93 per share, or roughly $2.21 billion. Asahi has set a tender offer for ZOLL shares that will begin in 10 trading days and remain open for 20 The Tokyo-based maker of chemicals, housing materials and synthetic fibers said it will buy Massachusetts-based Zoll Medical for $93 per share in a tender offer set to start within 10 working days. The offer will remain open for a minimum of 20 business days, the company said.
Also in merger and acquisition news, shares of China?s Tudou Holdings (TUDO) have rocketed nearly 200% higher in pre-market trading, after the online video company?s competitor Youku (YOKU) said it would buy the company in an all-stock deal. YOKU shares have jumped more than 17% on the news.
The earnings calendar is light, with only FuelCell Energy (FCEL), Silver Standard (SSRI), and Urban Outfitters (URBN) among today?s highlighted company?s releasing their quarterly reports.
Options activity was brisk heading into the weekend on Friday, with 2.28 million calls and 2.05 million puts changing hands on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE). Overall, the CBOE put/call volume ratio arrived at 0.90, well below the ratio?s 10-day (0.95) and 20-day (0.95) moving averages.
Call volume crept higher among index traders, with the CBOE index put/call volume ratio falling to 1.16 from Thursday?s perch at 1.28. However, puts were the contract of the day for VIX traders. Specifically, the CBOE Market Volatility Index (VIX) put/call volume ratio soared 77% to 1.38 ? its highest reading in more than three months.
