Scottish police on Thursday charged the former editor of the News of the World Scotland newspaper over the perjury trial of former lawmaker Tommy Sheridan.
Strathclyde Police revealed they arrested Douglas Wight, 39, on suspicion of perjury, conspiracy to hack telephones, and multiple charges of conspiracy to obtain personal data as part of Operation Rubicon.
The paper was forced to pay Sheridan ?200,000 ($315,000, 255,000 euros) in 2006 after it printed a story claiming the former socialist politican had attended a swingers' club.
However, Sheridan was convicted of perjury in 2010 relating to the court case and sentenced to three-years in prison, but was released after serving just over a year of his term.
A statement from the force said: "Officers of Operation Rubicon of Strathclyde Police arrested and charged a 39-year-old male with perjury before the High Court in Glasgow during the trial in 2010 of Tommy Sheridan, the former MSP, conspiracy (in Scotland) to hack telephones, multiple charges of conspiracy to obtain the personal data of members of the public in breach of the Data Protection Acts and individual offences under these Acts".
Andy Coulson, the former media chief of British Prime Minister David Cameron, appeared in court on Thursday charged with phone hacking while he was editor of the main edition of Rupert Murdoch's News of the World tabloid.
Coulson, 44, appeared alongside six other employees of the now defunct newspaper at a brief preliminary hearing at London's Westminster Magistrates Court.
